A Case for Conscious Normativity: Or How Ethics Literacy Can Benefit Sociology Students and Their Teachers

We argue that sociology students and their teachers could benefit from cultivating literacy in normative ethics, as well developing a thoughtful approach to ethical values principles, an intellectual virtue we label “conscious normativity.” The benefits of ethics conscious normativity include deeper appreciation for the centrality evaluations social life, renewed connection with many traditions underpin society, enhanced ability navigate discipline’s inescapable plurality develop informed position on doctrine value neutrality. outline some ways which enhance literacy, focusing points contact between sociological practice reflection. article concludes by considering meaning our argument sociology’s relationship highlighting cycles critique become accessible consciously sociologists.
